Again, New Variant of COVID-19 Found, Allegedly More Contagious and Malignant
A new variant of the Corona virus appears to have emerged in Nigeria, Africa. This was conveyed by the Head of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) Africa John Nkengasong, Thursday (24/12/2021).
Nkengasong emphasized that further investigation is needed regarding the emergence of a new variant of COVID-19 in Nigeria. The news comes after Britain and South Africa both reported a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which appears to be more contagious and virulent.
On the other hand, the UK has reported a new mutated variant of the Corona virus that is thought to be 70 percent more contagious. More in-depth research is underway to examine a new variant of Corona in the UK.
The emergence of a new Corona virus variant has caused travel restrictions in the region. Some countries have even banned entry and exit to England and South Africa due to the alleged emergence of a new variant of Corona, Indonesia is one of them
The origin of the virus is different, from the viruses in the UK and in South Africa, “said Nkengasong (24/12/2021) as quoted by CNA.
Nkengasong said that in an effort to detect the new coronavirus variants in Nigeria and South Africa, the African CDC will hold an emergency meeting this week. Information regarding the new variant of COVID-19 emerged after a surge in confirmed cases of Corona in Nigeria and Africa.
In the past week, Nigeria reported a 52 percent increase in cases and South Africa a 40 percent increase. But Nkengasong explained there was no evidence that the new variant had an effect on the increase in COVID-19 transmission in Nigeria, but he cautioned that the country is doing less genome surveillance than the UK.
He also said that the CDC and the African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases in Nigeria would study more samples of the virus.
“Give us some time. It’s still very early days,” he said in response to a question about the virus variant.
Scientists claim the origins of the new British coronavirus variant have been revealed
At present, the new Corona variant has spread to almost all of the UK and other countries in the world. Recently, scientists claim that they already know where the virus first appeared.
The new variant is said to be 70 percent more contagious, causing many countries in the world to ban immigrants from Britain. According to scientists, the first sample of the new variant was found in a person living in Cantebury, Kent, in September 2021.
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that the variant was first discovered in Kent on September 20, 2021. From the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium data, the main sample of this variant was found near Cantebury.
Experts believe the new variant may have mutated in humans who are immunosuppressed for a long time. This means their ability to fight off infections and other diseases is reduced, usually due to their own illness or health condition, such as cancer.
There was another case in London from September, so the B117 variant was here early. We don’t know exactly how many cases there are in each place and in the early days, “explained Dr. Jeffrey Barrett, director of the SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Initiative at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, quoted by the Daily Star, Friday (8/1/2021 ).
“There have been a number of reports of individual patients having prolonged disease, and among them a mutation pattern similar to that of B117 emerged,” he continued.
Dr Barrett said it was hypothesized that an event like this could be of origin, although not all patients are immunosuppressed. The B117 variant became the first example of a new variant appearing in this manner which became widespread.
Experts believe it is the first time this new virus outbreak has occurred in Kent. And then it may have spread through the lines south and east of London before hitting parts of London and Essex.
Currently, Britain is implementing a lockdown policy for the third time until next February. This is of course to prevent the spread of the new variant of the Corona virus.
